A digital future in the Matterhorn Paradise: Zermatt launches the Smartphone-Ticket
From summer 2025, access to the Matterhorn Paradise will be completely digital for the first time: thanks to the new access control readers from SKIDATA, which have been in operation since November 2024, the mountain experience can now be conveniently accessed via Smartphone-Ticket – without the need for a physical key card. This is another step towards digitalisation and user-friendliness.
Over the past few months, comprehensive tests have been carried out on the functionality, usability and user experience of the Smartphone-Ticket. Selected test groups used the digital ticket solely for transport in the resort and provided feedback via an online form. This enabled various sources of error to be identified and gradually rectified. In close cooperation with SKIDATA, the system was continuously optimised to ensure stable and user-friendly operation. The Smartphone-Ticket does not require mobile data or a constant internet connection – it even works in flight mode as long as Bluetooth and GPS are activated. The additional battery consumption for modern devices is around 10% per day, depending on the model.
Launch starts – expansion to follow
The Smartphone-Ticket is being introduced in Zermatt for activities such as summer skiing, biking and single rides. The digital ticket can also be used for season and annual passes, but for the time being, the new ticket type only works in Zermatt. The Smartphone-Ticket – a simple, convenient and forward-looking solution for all winter sports and mountain enthusiasts, developed and created in constructive collaboration between the three partners Zermatt Bergbahnen, Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn / Gornergratbahn and Zermatt Tourism.
How the Smartphone-Ticket works
The Smartphone-Ticket can be purchased conveniently online or at a sales point in Zermatt. It’s stored in the Matterhorn app under the section "Ticket" and the tab "Smartphone-Ticket". It can be activated at the touch of a button on the day of use. At that point, your phone can communicate directly via Bluetooth Low Energy with the entrance gate, which will open without your even needing to take your phone out of your pocket. The new ticket type thus offers the same full functionality as a keycard - even in offline mode.
