The highest crossing of the Alps by cable car

Matterhorn Alpine Crossing

The cable car journey around the Matterhorn offers breathtaking views of the Zermatt mountains and takes you on a journey through the entire fauna, flora and glacier landscape. With a high standard of safety and comfort, the national border between Switzerland and Italy can be crossed at just about 3,500 m above sea level. During this unique crossing of the Alps, numerous other highlights await, such as the highest glacier palace in the world or the viewing platform with views of 38 four-thousand-metre peaks and 14 glaciers in 3 different countries.

Whether as a day trip across the border or as part of a fixed itinerary through Europe, the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing offers an exciting experience for locals and visitors alike.

A glimpse into the past

Furi

The Furi mountain station is situated at an altitude of 1,867 metres above sea level. It is thought that cattle already grazed on the surrounding meadowland hundreds of years ago. The old wooden barns really do give the impression of taking a step back in time. There are many stories to tell and relive on Furi.

The 100-metre expanse of the suspension bridge is spanned high above the raging Gorner Gorge, 90 metres above it to be precise. The view below is not for those of a nervous disposition! On the other hand, there is another sort of high point for those who make the crossing: the Dossen glacier garden. This journey back in time to the Ice Age will reveal glacial potholes formed 4,000 years ago, mysterious rock caves and much more besides. A barbecue area, fireplaces and the children’s playground offer a chance to rest and relax.

The smooth rocks eroded over time by the water and the river’s glistening play of colours can be seen up close, as you can admire the raging Gorner Gorge from specially erected wooden walkways inside the gorge. See here for more information. If you like a bit more of an adrenalin high, you can make the crossing accompanied by a guide. Head for heights required!

The Flow Trail covers a distance of 1.3 kilometres from Furi to Moos (Zermatt) with an average downhill gradient of 7.5% and an elevation change of 95 metres. The Moos Trail is great fun for beginners and experienced mountain bikers alike. The challenge is to see who can make it all the way to the valley without pedalling!

A hike on any of the trails at Furi involves walking through magical landscapes. For example, you can walk from Zermatt to Furi on an number of different paths. And go on further to Zmutt or Stafel.  On the Furi themed trail you literally walk on the thousand-year-old traces left by the Gorner glacier, whereas the walk along the romantic larch path to the idyllic Schwarzsee lake is all about alpine plants. There are all sorts of options to choose from.
